Donald V. Lockard:

Faulkville – Donald V. Lockard passed away Sunday February 13, 2011 of a heart attack. He was born June 5, 1950 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a Vietnam veteran, served three tours as a helicopter crew chief. Later he was a drill instructor. Don loved his country and was proud to be a soldier. He had recently started the task of being an advocate to help his fellow veterans in any way he could. He spent many hours researching to prepare himself to take on that challenge. After his granddaughter had joined the ROTC in high school and had decided she wanted to have a career in the military she found out she is a diabetic and could not join. Don called the governor to find out if there was anything she could do in the service so that she could fulfill her dream. He was so proud of her. Even though she knows better, he always told her she was his least favorite granddaughter. She says she will always remember he PawPaw sticking his finger in her food and asking, “ya gonna eat that?” She also says, “My PawPaw was the best man on earth and I know he is still with me.”

 Don played in the band in his younger years and loved music, playing his guitar, and singing. After several years of being a member of the Dixieland Cruisers he joined their entertainment group, the “T-Birds” and he loved being on stage again.

Don owned Westside Collision and Towing in Pooler. Even in his business Don was always ready to help a friend or stranger. He was quick to throw a bill away if he knew someone couldn’t afford it. Don would get in his wrecker on Christmas Day and ride up and down I-95 and I-16 to help any stranded motorist and his only payment was the satisfaction of being able to lend a helping hand.

 Don became President of the Dixieland Cruisers car club in May 2008. He loved the club members and considered them family. He worked to keep it the best club around. Several of the guys meet at the Krystal every morning for breakfast and they have a great time pulling jokes on each other, and solving the world’s problems. Don always wanted to be there to start his day off with his buddies.

Of all the things that made him the special man that he was, the most important was that he was a family man. Don loved his children, grandchildren, brothers, nieces, and nephews. There were many others that called him “Dad” or “Uncle Don” because he opened his heart and loved them and took him under his wing. He loved being needed and it gave him great pleasure to help anyone in any way he could.

 Don was a volunteer fireman; Fire Chief of Lake George, owner/operator of Westside Collision, and the presiding president of the Dixieland Cruisers. He was of the Baptist faith, loved to fish, old cars, and loved his family and friends.

 He is survived and dearly loved by daughter, Laura Shuman of Effingham County; sons, Charles Lockard of Effingham County and Christopher Lockard of Savannah; longtime companion, B.J. Gordon of Effingham; grandchildren, Ashlee Lockard, Taylor Shuman, Olivia Lockard, Madison Shuman, and Jordan Shuman; brothers, Ronald “Ronnie” Lockard and Robert “Doug” Lockard; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 Don was a good man and left this world a better place because of the many lives he touched.

He will be greatly missed. He is gone from this world but not forgotten.

Memorial services were held at 6pm on Wednesday February 16, 2011 at the funeral home. Friends may sign the online register book at www.stricklandandsonsfuneralhome.com.

Ignatius W. "Izzy" Rogers, Jr. - SAVANNAH - Ignatius W. Rogers, Jr., 66, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Memorial University Medical Center. The native and lifelong resident of Savannah, retired from Champion Machine after 41 years of service. He graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1960 and was a veteran of the United States Army. Izzy, as he was known by his many friends, was a member of the Dixieland Cruisers and an Antique Car enthusiast. He was of the Catholic faith and an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Judith H. Rogers, of Savannah, his daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Glenn Price, of Savannah, his son and daughter-in-law, Trae and Amy Rogers, of Houston, Texas, his sisters, Joyce R. Fischer, Ruthe Martin and her daughters, Marta and Mary; grandchildren, Cameron and McKenzie Rogers, Anna Price, Heather James and her husband, Foster, great-granddaughter, Naiya James, several nieces and nephews, and his mother-in-law, Fleta F. Browder, of Miami, Florida. Visitation: 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, August 2, 2009 with a Christian Wake Service at 5:00 p.m., at the Islands Chapel of Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors. Cynthia “Cookie” Cole

Cynthia “Cookie” Cole left us on August 8^th, 2007.  She was born on August 31, 1946 and came here with her husband Raymond “Shorty” Cole from Houston, TX 25 years ago.  She and Shorty joined our club in 2002 and they became our most active and fun loving members.  Cookie was always willing to jump in and help with all activities.  In the past few years, she became the ‘gestapo’ of serving the Low Country Boil the night before our annual show.  No matter when, no matter where, Cookie gave us that bright flashing smile and kind speaking voice of hers.  In her past three years Cookie was much more ill than we knew, but always tried to make light of her health.  She enjoyed the entertainment and participated for the past few years also.  This club will miss her dearly.  Everyone was her friend.

I think we have been richly blessed to have had the fortune of knowing her.

Elmer Lawrence Winkler, Jr.

“Wink” as we so nick named him, passed away on May 22, 2007.  He was born in Collinsville, Illinois, and was a veteran, having served in the US Air Force.  He was the owner of E. L Winkler Towing Co. His wife, Sherrye Snider Winkler, survives him.  He had been an active member of our club until a car accident put him down for several long months.  After that injury, we didn’t get to see him often, but he remained on our roster and made his appearances from time to time.  He was also a veteran, having served in the US Air Force.  It is unfortunate to have lost him because we always referred to him as one of the “old timers” which meant he had been a member with all the original guys who formed our club.

John “Johnny” Lance, Jr.

Again, we are losing one of the original group of Dixieland Cruisers.  These alumni had a strong influence on all of us “newbies”.  Johnny died of cancer on October 9^{th,  2007}.  He fought a long hard fight to beat that disease, with his wife Anita by his side.  Johnny was also a veteran, serving in US Army Reserve.  Even though, they remained members to a car club, they had a passionate love of motorcycle riding.  Members like this are hard to replace.  They just stay in the background and you know you can count on them when you need them.
